A singular case? The life of books in the chapels of Nogueira (1296-1464): origins, conservation and loan
The libraries of Portuguese medieval chapels, especially of scholars or royal officers, represent a rich and promising field of studies, which is still little explored, certainly due to the difficulty in finding documentary sources that allow this type of study. In this sense, this presentation intends to examine the libraries of the chapels of Nogueira between 1296 and 1464, which was explored in our masters dissertation from the documentation preserved in this family’s archive, a very rare possibility in the study of the Middle Ages in Portugal. Thereby, this paper will be divided into two parts. Firstly, we will present the strategy of the Nogueira to promote the elementary and higher education of their family and protégés. Then, we will analyze the libraries that the Nogueira gathered in their chapels, by focusing on the origin, conservation standards and practices of lending of books. We expect, with this presentation, to contribute to review the negative perspective of Portuguese medievalists on the strategy of accumulation and loans of books of Portuguese medieval urban families.
