Studied at the Universities of Münster, Heidelberg and Bonn. 1970 Ph.D. dissertation on the Beatus manuscripts, 1982 Thesis of Habilitation on early medieval non Spanish Apocalypse cycles. Taught at the Universities of Pittsburgh, Lexington/Kent., Geneva, Paris-Nanterre, Bamberg, Regensburg, Los Angeles, and Marburg. 1995-2007 Full Professor at the University of Tübingen. 2007-2008 Member of the School of Historical Studies of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.
Main areas of research and publication: medieval book illumination, Romanesque sculpture; Greco; Goya; art of the Spanish Civil War; images of Jews, medieval and modern.
Facsimile commentaries of the Apocalypses at Trier (1975), Oxford Douce 180 (1983), Bamberg (2000) and Valenciennes (2011/12) as well as of the Beatus manuscripts of Urgel (1999/2001), Manchester (2002), Lorvão (2004), Las Huelgas (2005/06), Berlin (2010), Madrid Vitr. 14-1 (2011) and Saint-Sever (2013).
